Join us on a remarkable journey through time, back to the origins of our manufactory in the 18th century – from its beginnings as a general store in Munich, through its years as a supplier to the Royal Bavarian Court, to today’s company with a showroom on Brienner Straße. As it was over 200 years ago, the Prantl brand still stands for the highest quality, craftsmanship, and personal service.
1797
The company Fr. Ant. Prantl in Munich is first officially mentioned and confirmed.
Until approximately 1850
As a general store, the company sells luxury goods and artistic crafts from all over the world, such as lamps, tea, tobacco, and coffee. As an additional service, products can be personalized. For this, Prantl employs its own engravers for crest, initial, and monogram production. Thanks to the high demand for elaborately designed logos, business stationery, etc., in the 19th century, steel engraving and blind embossing boom. Many well-known Munich families and entrepreneurs are among Prantl’s customers.
1822
Prantl relocates to the elegant Hofarkaden directly on Munich’s Odeonsplatz. The manufactory’s headquarters remain here until its destruction by incendiary bombs in 1944.
Around 1845
The assortment of special goods earns the Prantl company the honor of serving as a Royal Bavarian Court supplier.
1870s
Production of high-quality greeting cards, inspired by French and English models, begins.
Second half of the 19th century
Notebooks, leather goods, manuscript books, and calendars expand the greeting card assortment. Prantl’s notebooks are printed in 8 languages and sold throughout Europe. Rilke, among others, is a connoisseur of these books.
End of the 19th century
The so-called “Artists’ Department” for art supplies is established. It attracts numerous artists, such as Kandinsky. It is discontinued in the 1980s and 1990s.
To this day
Even today, Prantl remains true to its tradition of combining high-quality materials with artisanal craftsmanship to create exclusive products. For every occasion, you will find the right invitation, business stationery, or a greeting card designed by the in-house artist.
